Ms McLain is a volunteer director and is also the current President of One Child At A Time – One Heart At A Time.  Since August, 2007 Christine has been serving as a United Methodist Volunteer in Mission in Swaziland focusing on education and health concerns for women and children.  Prior to going to Swaziland, Christine worked for IBM for 18 years where she received training in many facets of the Hardware Service side of the business including Project Management.  For the last 12 years of her IBM career she was responsible for planning, developing and implementing the hardware service curriculum for service technicians world wide.  Prior to going to IBM she taught severely handicapped children in the State of Indiana and California and before that she was an office manager and bookkeeper for a national labor union.  Christine holds a BA degree in Special education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.  Before going to Swaziland, Ms McLain served on the executive committee of the United Methodist Women, was a youth mentor, participated in mission experiences in the US and co-led and then led a team to South Africa.  She also received training and has experience as a Stephen Minister.

Deb HoltzVice President

Ms Holtz is a volunteer director and is also the current Vice President of One Child At A Time – One Heart At A Time.  Debra is currently the Minnesota State Ombudsman for Long-Term Care, a service of the Minnesota Board on Aging.  Deb holds a degree in special education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado and a juris doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Ms. Holtz has worked in social services delivery systems for the past thirty years.  Her previous experience includes direct care service in nursing homes, intermediate care facilities for persons with mental retardation (large group homes and institutions), and state hospitals, teaching, advocacy at a non-profit, policy work at the MN Department of Human Services, public guardianship administrator, home and community-based provider, Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations specialist in higher education and sub-contractor for the federal government, with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  She was an adjunct faculty member at Hamline University, MN.  Deb traveled to Swaziland to see the work that Chris McLain was doing and saw some of the same types of challenges (both individual advocacy and systemic advcacy needed) in Swaziland that she experiences in the Minnesota State Ombudsman’s Office.

Laura CortezSecretary/Treasurer

Mrs Cortez is a volunteer director and is also the current Secretary and Treasurer of One Child At A Time – One Heart At A Time. Laura’s background includes financial records auditing, development and maintenance of several accounting systems and negotiation of financial contracts for both business and non-profit organizations. Her experience stems from 7 years as an insurance premium account auditor whose duties included detail knowledge of laws and regulations regarding workers compensation and liability insurance, and the auditing of insured companies accounting records. She has 3 years as an accounting resolutions manager for a major insurance company. Her most recent experience includes 19 years in medical administration including over seeing full operations of the surgery suite and office staff. Laura maintained all business financial records including development and maintaince of business fee structure and submitting various state and federal filings. Her volunteer work with other non-profit groups includes 8 years volunteering with several schools including posts as  PTA president for 2 years, during which time she instituted a new accounting structure for the school PTA and as a school site coordinator for 2 years (which included development and implementing a state approved site planning document). Laura has also planned & negotiated fundraising events for various non-profit groups (PTA, marching band and boys gymnastics). Laura has traveled to South Africa and Swaziland 3 times to assist Chris in volunteer mission endeavors resulting in an intimate knowledge of the needs for which this non-profit has been formed to meet.
